What is a General Rate Increase?

First of all, let’s figure this concept out.

A General Rate Increase, GRI for short, is a special adjustment of sea freight rates.

It can happen in various or specific routes and lasts only a set period of time.

Usually, companies tend to be scared about the General Rate Increase, but there are some ways to act as to avoid further complications in your business.

It’s important to remember that in some cases, the Port Congestion is causing the carriers to avoid receiving more demand, so there will be no way of negotiating space, because there will be no space availability.

Besides that, the Port Congestion also tends to affect the progress of some operations, making them slower.

So, as a matter to decrease this factor and keep the competitiveness of the company, sea shipping companies decree the General Rate Increase.

How will the companies operate during the General Rate Increase?

Now, we’re going to talk about how companies will act during this period of time, specifically Maersk, one of the biggest shipping companies in the world.

So, the new tariff will comprehend the routes from Brazil, Paraguay, Argentina and Uruguay to West Coast South America, Caribbean, US Gulf and North America.

The rate during August 1st to August 24th will increase about USD 1.500,00 per container.

Other companies still haven’t informed all of the decisions about this GRI, but the tendency is that all of them will apply the new rate on this same route.

¿Qué es General Rate Increase?

En primer lugar, averiguemos este concepto.

Un General Rate Increase, GRI para abreviar, es un ajuste especial de las tarifas de los fletes marítimos.

Puede ocurrir en rutas diversas o específicas y dura solo un período de tiempo determinado.

Habitualmente las empresas suelen asustarse ante el Incremento General de Tarifas, pero existen algunas formas de actuar para evitar mayores complicaciones en su negocio.

Es importante recordar que en algunos casos la Congestión Portuaria está provocando que los transportistas eviten recibir mayor demanda, por lo que no habrá forma de negociar espacio, porque no habrá disponibilidad de espacio.

Además de eso, la Congestión Portuaria también tiende a afectar el avance de algunas operaciones, haciéndolas más lentas.

¿Por qué ocurre esto?

El aumento general de tarifas generalmente ocurre debido a algo llamado temporada alta de envíos.

Esta temporada alta de envío comienza en agosto y continúa hasta finales de otoño, normalmente en noviembre.

Se produce una temporada alta cuando la demanda de envío es demasiado grande, lo que hace que las compañías navieras casi alcancen un exceso de reservas.

Por lo que, con el fin de disminuir este factor y mantener la competitividad de la empresa, las empresas navieras marítimas decretan el General Rate Increase.

¿Cómo operarán las empresas durante el General Rate Increase?

Ahora vamos a hablar de cómo actuarán las empresas durante este periodo de tiempo, concretamente Maersk, una de las navieras más grandes del mundo.

Así, la nueva tarifa comprenderá las rutas desde Brasil, Paraguay, Argentina y Uruguay hacia la costa oeste de Sudamérica, el Caribe, el Golfo de Estados Unidos y Norteamérica.

La tarifa del 1 al 24 de agosto será de U$ 1.500,00 por contenedor.

Otras empresas aún no han informado todas las decisiones sobre este GRI, pero la tendencia es que todas apliquen la nueva tarifa en esta misma vía.
